Services Provided At Shelter

Second Chance Pet Rescue is a no-kill shelter. Our focus is to help the pets in need in our community, but we know no borders when it comes to helping pets without homes.

We are not an animal control facility; our shelter does not accept found or stray pets unless there are special circumstances. We are a rescue; that means that we accept pets that are owned and no longer able to be cared for or those who have been abandoned and left behind. We also accept pets from other shelters and organizations when our help is requested.

Our goal is to become an open-admission no-kill shelter. Open admission means that we would never need to turn away a pet that comes to our door. Currently, we are always asked to help more pets than we physically have the space to house in our shelter facility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I can’t keep my Pet?

Please reach out to us before coming to the shelter with your pet. Although we may not be able to accept your pet immediately, we may be able to accept your pet within a week or two. We can give you some forms to fill out ahead of time and let you know a good day that you could bring your pet to us. You can also submit a request to surrender a pet by clicking the waiting list button.

How long will you keep my Pet?

Because we are a no-kill shelter, your pet will stay here safe and well cared for until the perfect home or rescue can be found. Of course, this is not an inexpensive thing for the shelter and we ask for a donation at the time that you drop off your pet. We also made sponsorship opportunities available to help us cover the costs of daily pet care and pet medical needs.

Can you board my pet temporarily?

We are not a boarding kennel; we cannot temporarily hold pets. We can give you several options with in our local area of organizations that may be able to help.

I can’t afford pet food. Is there anyway you can help?

Yes, we do maintain a small food bank thanks to some generous donations. We are from time to time able to provide support to owners who are in a bind and need food for their pets. Please stop in and visit with the folks in the office who will be happy to help you.

Do you offer pet training?

Although we do not offer specific training or behavioral counseling, we may be able to answer some basic questions and provide a few simple suggestions. We can also point you in the right direction to some folks who may be able to help you.

Can I bring my pet to you for vaccines or to get him fixed?

We are unable to offer veterinary care to privately owned animals at this time. Our dream is to one day have a spay-neuter clinic and well-care clinic on site, but we still have a long way to go. At this time if you need services that include spay neuter, we are recommending that you contact Joplin Humane Society to offer very affordable services to pet owners. Tractor Supply Company also hosts occasionally vaccine clinics; you should check your local store for dates, times, and availability.

If you can’t help me right away is there anyone else that I can call?

Yes, and we recommend that you reach out to as many shelters and organizations as possible, and then you may have the opportunity to get your pet into the shelter that can help you first.
