Where can I view adoptable pets?

You can view all of our adoptable Dogs and Cats online. We update their availability and location in real-time. If you see them, they are still available for adoption, and when you click on their photo it will show some basic info about the pet you are interested in. There is no appointment needed to visit our pets.

How long does it take to process an adoption?

The adoption process takes about an hour and does not require you to fill out any paperwork ahead of time – you’ll do that once you’ve met someone and decide it’s a good fit. Please note: If we are currently running an adoption special, the wait to adopt may be longer than an hour, so please allocate additional time for your visit. If you have met a pet and believe it will be a great fit for your home, you will fill out some paperwork and sit down with one of our adoption counselors for a quick interview. If all is approved, in most cases you will be able to take home your new pet that day. They will have been spayed/neutered, microchipped, have age-appropriate vaccines, have been heartworm tested, and have received intestinal dewormer.

Do you do out-of-state adoptions?

Our adoptions are first come, first serve. If you are interested in visiting our shelter, we recommend looking at the available pets online as close to your travel date as possible to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information regarding the animals in our care.

Can I place a hold on any of your adoptable pets?

Small dogs, puppies, and specialty breeds go quickly here at Second Chance. If your schedule allows, you are encouraged to visit our dogs here at the shelter, as we often have these dogs but they may get chosen quickly. If you are traveling from a distance, we offer $25, non-refundable 24-hour holds on our available pets (some exceptions may apply). We are not able to hold any pet beyond 24 hours. Space at the shelter is always critical and when a pet is available, we want them to find a home as soon as possible. We always have pets in urgent need waiting to come into the shelter.

I have another pet at home, can I bring them to meet the pet(s) I’m interested in adopting?

If you need to introduce your pet(s) to our pet, we recommend visiting an animal first to make sure that it is a good candidate for your home, and so that you have free hands. If you decide you would like to proceed with a meet and greet, you could then please bring your dog to the shelter and staff will assist you. It's best to have a friend with you to hold onto your dog while you make arrangements to meet the prospective new pet. Our staff will let your dog and our dog drag a leash and greet each other naturally, without you present so that the introduction can be as objective as possible. Please plan on separating your newly adopted dog from your current dog on your drive home (in a kennel, for example), unless you have assistance.
We do not advise cat meet n’ greets. Instead, our staff members will discuss the best way to introduce your new cat to your current cat(s) in the home.

Do I need to plan for any other expenses for my pet other than my adoption fee?

All of our adopters are expected to have a proper leash and collar for their dogs or a carrier to take home cats. Adopters should be prepared to take their newly adopted pet to a veterinarian of their choice for a wellness visit within one week of adoption. It's always advisable to have funds available in the event of an emergency as well as for regular necessities like monthly preventatives, food, and toys.
